Birch Street Radio plays on in 2019

Here at Birch Street Radio, we're looking forward to bringing you more great music in 2019 - new and classic rock, alternative, pop, folk-rock and more. We've been doing it since April 2013 and continually improving our Marvelous Mix.

Along the way, our program has moved several times from one internet-broadcasting platform to another. And it's likely we will have to make another change in the next week or so.

TorontoCast, which has carried Birch Street Radio for the past year, tentatively plans to discontinue service to listeners in the United States in mid-January. We're preparing for that by setting up a separate stream for U.S. listeners. You can try it out by clicking the button labeled "Testing: new player for U.S." in the Listen Now box near the top of our website.

Unless there's a change in TorontoCast's plans, we will officially launch the new stream next week. Listening links for the U.S. will change, and listeners using certain internet-radio players will have to "re-tune" them to connect to the new stream. We'll do our best to make the transition as smooth as possible by providing up-to-date information and listening links here at birchstreetradio.com.

We're committed to continue bringing our Marvelous Mix to long-time listeners and new fans in 2019 and beyond. If you ever have trouble tuning in our "signal," remember that you can always find us here at birchstreetradio.com.

Stay tuned-in to our marvelous mix

Heads-up to our listeners: It appears Birch Street Radio might soon have to switch streaming providers (again!), as the landscape continues to shift in the wacky world of internet radio.

If so, some third-party players might stop working or have to be "re-tuned." As we've done in the past, we'll try to make any transition as smooth as possible.

If you ever have trouble listening on any player or app, please come here to birchstreetradio.com for the latest connection information. You can also contact us at birchstreetradio@gmail.com.

We're hoping to avoid any disruption, and will do our best to keep our Marvelous Music Mix flowing!

Join us at the beach - or wherever you go

We're going into vacation mode for the next two weeks. So a couple of our regular features - the Saturday block of New Music picks-of-the-week, and our Sunday show The Detour - will be on hiatus until the weekend of September 8-9.

But the marvelous mix of music on Birch Street Radio will keep playing! And here's a reminder that you can listen to our internet stream anywhere you go. Besides the players on this page, you can find us on TuneIn and many other streaming sites and apps.

A year of giant leaps for Birch Street Radio

One year ago, Birch Street Radio was rolling along on Live365 when word came just before New Year's that the pioneering internet-radio company was about to go bust.

That prompted us to do two things: scramble to find a new service to host our program - and, step up our game!

We've since moved twice - in January to Radionomy and in September to SoniXcast. Special thanks to listeners who have followed us from one streaming host to another!

So far, so good at SoniXcast, which broadcasts our Marvelous Mix of Music from Montreal, Canada. There have been occasional technical glitches (as with any internet system), but mostly it's been a smooth ride as we present our wide variety of music 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all commercial-free.

And amid the jumps from one webcasting partner to another, we've boosted our own commitment to creating the best mix we can from the best bands and singer-songwriters of the past half-century or so. We're adding more music every week - new releases from established artists, and new discoveries from the vast community of independent artists. We enter 2017 with a much bigger and more varied playlist than ever before.

This year we also boosted our visibility with this website, our Facebook page and Twitter feed, and our connections to various internet-radio listing sites and apps. Birch Street Radio can now be found on TuneIn, Radio.net, Nobex, Streema, RadioForest, Radioguide.fm, Shoutcast.com and more. (Let us know if there are some we're missing!)

As we've learned this year, internet radio is an ever-changing business. It's certainly possible that we'll need to make more moves in the future. Please remember that you can always find us here at birchstreetradio.com, where we'll always have up-to-date players and links as well as news about our programming.

Happy New Year to all!

Thanks for listening! Your feedback is welcome!

It's been about two months since our program moved to a new webcasting company, SoniXcast, and we're happy with the results. Our stream reliability has been solid and the backup programming at Master Control kicked in smoothly when we had computer problems at Birch Street Studios.

Meanwhile we continue adding both new and classic tunes to our Marvelous Mix of many flavors of rock and related music styles. (We're a little behind schedule this week, but will be updating our New Music bin very soon.)

Listen from anywhere on your mobile device
And we've seen our listening audience grow as more music lovers find us on various web-radio directories and mobile platforms like TuneIN, Radio.net, Nobex and more.

We're glad you're listening - and we'd love to hear from you with your comments and suggestions. You can comment on this page, find us on Facebook and Twitter, or email us at birchstreetradio@gmail.com

System upgraded, music updated!

We had a bit of a crisis at Birch Street Studios on Sunday when our plans for a computer upgrade became, um, urgent. As in, our old system suddenly failed completely. Happily, the backup playlist at our broadcast host, SoniXcast, kicked in while we scrambled to get back in operation with some brand-new equipment. Even more happily, we were able to get our regular Marvelous Mix back "on the air" in about six hours.

Then we got back to the business of picking new music for the new week. Here are the latest additions to our New Music rotation:
  • "Got Soul" is the first track from an upcoming new album with the same title by Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
  • Sting's new album, 57th & 9th, came out a few days ago. After playing the first single, "I Can't Stop Thinking About You," we're now adding "One Fine Day."
  • The Shins have released a single, Dead Alive, ahead of their next album, due sometime next year.
  • And we're catching up with the latest release from singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata, Tightrope Walker. Our pick for the New Music bin is "Let Me Be Your Girl."

We usually give more detail about our new-music picks, but right now we need to head back into the studio and finish uploading our big music library to the new system. Here's hoping it keeps rocking and rolling for a long time to come!

Introducing our new 'sister station' - Radio 1999

Tune in Radio 1999
Do you ever just feel like forgetting about the 21st Century? If so, you might like to spend a little time listening to our new sister station, Radio 1999

The Radio 1999 playlist is packed with our favorite rock from the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s. It's some of the music that you hear on Birch Street Radio -- but none of that 2000-2016 stuff.

It's what Birch Street Radio would have sounded like just before the turn of the century!

So take a little trip back with Radio 1999 -- the station that caught the Y2K bug and never turned its clock past 12/31/99.

One caution: Radio 1999 is on Radionomy, so there will be station breaks when you might hear (shudder) current commercials.

When you're ready to return to the present day, come on back to (commercial-free!) Birch Street Radio, where new music and classics mix marvelously together!

We've changed channels. Have you?

It's been six weeks since we launched the "new and improved" version of Birch Street Radio. We hope you're enjoying our 24/7 commercial-free stream.

Birch Street Radio is now transmitted to the world by SoniXcast. We produce the program at Birch Street Studios in Beautiful Downtown Suburbia, and SoniXcast carries it on one of its channels, originating from Montreal, Canada.

All the players and links on this website have been switched to the new channel. In a matter of days, our older stream on Radionomy will sign off for good. (The stream may continue to operate for a while, but it won't be carrying our program.)

So make sure you've updated your links to Birch Street Radio in your media players, mobile apps or web bookmarks!

In addition to the players on this page, you can tune in the SoniXcast stream of Birch Street Radio by:
  • searching for Birch Street Radio in the TuneIn, Radio.net or Nobex mobile apps
  • searching for Birch Street Radio at streema.com, radioforest.net, radioguide.fm, liveonlineradio.net
  • searching for Birch Street Radio SX at shoutcast.com
  • entering http://cabhs30.sonixcast.com:9506/stream in any media player - including iTunes and the ServeStream app for Android, among others.
We'll be added to more web-radio directories soon.

As always, the easiest way to find us is right here at birchstreetradio.com!

Our New & Improved stream is 'on the air'

It's New! and Improved!
Check out the "New & Improved" Birch Street Radio!

The players and links on this page have been updated to bring you Birch Street Radio on its new channel.

In our new arrangement with web broadcaster SoniXcast, we can bring you more music per hour - because we don't have to take breaks to allow for advertising.

Yes, the new Birch Street Radio is commercial-free. And it's still free to you - no sign-up required!

The new stream is also available on more sites and mobile apps, including TuneIn and Nobex.

The previous version of Birch Street Radio is still playing on Radionomy, which has been carrying our program since January. That channel will be phased out over the next several weeks -- so be sure to update your links and players! If you're listening to the old stream, you'll hear announcements asking you to come to this website and connect to the new one.

(We're planning to launch a spin-off station on Radionomy this fall. More on that later.)

The "new & improved" Birch Street Radio will continue to mix brand-new and classic rock, folk-rock, alternative, indie music and more. We hope you'll continue listening! Enjoy!

We're building a better Birch Street Radio

We're creating a new, improved, commercial-free version of Birch Street Radio.

Our "marvelous mix of music" is preparing to move to a new internet stream. You might say we're changing channels -- like when a TV series moves from one network to another.

On our new stream, we'll continue playing new & classic music by bands & singer-songwriters from the '60s to today -- and more music, because we won't have to take station breaks to allow for advertisements.

We'll make the switch gradually, At the moment, we're simulcasting the same program on both channels. The new one is available on TuneIn, Radio.netRadioforest,netStreema.com and certain other sites, as well as the mobile apps from TuneIn, Radio.net and Nobex. The original stream continues on Radionomy, com and certain other sites. Both can be found on Shoutcast.com by searching for Birch Street Radio.

Once we're sure things are working well, we will split the programming. The new stream will drop the station breaks. The older stream will keep running for a while, but with a smaller playlist and commercial breaks. If you're listening to the older stream, you'll hear announcements asking you to come to this website and connect to the new stream. Eventually the older stream will be discontinued.

The internet-broadcasting landscape has been going through a lot of change lately, and there's always a chance we'll have to make further moves or changes in the future. But we plan to do whatever's best to keep the music playing -- and we hope you'll continue listening to Birch Street Radio.

Remember, you can always find the latest links & players here at birchstreetradio.com
